I use the Revolution on my dogs and my cats. (same chemical, different dose)

Fleas live off the dog more than on. They jump on for a quick meal, then jump back off. Except for cases of severe flea infestation, where the majority stay on the pet.

If your dog is allergic to flea saliva, it will only take one flea to really set them off scratching.
