I have taken mine on 6 hour flights, which means they are stuck in the carrier for 10 hours or so and they do just fine.
I also once went on a 12 hour road trip with four dogs and four people in one car
So it can be done. Mine LOVE roadtrips because they usually get scrambled eggs from McDonalds as a treat when we stop for breakfast
The trips usually take a little longer with the dogs because I stop a bit more often and let them stretch their legs a little bit but its always fun and I think the dogs like seeing new places
