Some of these devices have microphones on them and can trigger them to respond by external noises not even made by the dog. I have a cute story to share though...my son and DIL have two Labs. One barks constantly, only at night. My son bought a collar that sprays citronella..didn't work...bought a high pitch noise device that goes off when he barks..didn't work...so, my DIL got a pair of walkie talkies because she was convinced "Beamer" was lonely at night outside..so she puts the walkie talkie taped around his collar and when he barks at night..she talks to him and soothes him from hers in the bedroom....wala..problem getting much better.
What a thoughtful DIL you have, she'll make a good mommy!
