We have five kiddos from age 10 years to 6 years and they never have "full" run of the house.
We have an indoor "doggie fence" that prohibits access to the dining room, front door, and bedrooms.

They have full run of the laundry, kitchen, family room, and living room.

We did this because when visitors come to the door and our guys want to greet them, sometimes people don't look down, and I didn't want them to get stepped on or worse...leave the door open and have an escapee.

With five, we have to take turns letting them sleep with us, but they don't seem to mind not being able to go everywhere.
