I lived in the South until a couple of years ago. The only ones that used Hey frequently were very young kids. I'm a bit old fashioned, some of the manners and socially acceptable things my mother taught me really stuck. I remember when I, as a kid I sould respond or addressed with Hey!, she'd come back with Hay is for horses, respond with civility.
