I don't know how old your kids are, but unless you're set on a purebred (and even if you are) I'd say go to your local pound with the kids and see if you all can agree on a dog there. A lot of them are still young, but old enough that you should be able to determine about how big they'll get. When I was younger I loved having dogs to wrestle and play with, and big enough that I could take them for walks/runs without having to worry about someone attacking me. Plus I would never feel comfortable running with anything that was much shorter than about mid-thigh on me...just me though, my mom has a cocker, she was a shy one and she has the tendency to piddle when excited. But they are beautiful dogs. Good luck with the search

Maybe a beagle? As long as they get enough exercise and training, they are fantastic little dogs.
