Just keep an eagle eye on her! As little as you think she is for going into heat -- think how little she would be to carry pups! Don't want to risk her life! I agree that your vet was probably trying to wait til she was a little bigger. Most are reluctant to sedate under 3 pounds.
She is also going into heat a little early. My girl had her first heat at 10 months. You can spay while they are in heat, but they usually charge you a little extra and I think it might be a little more risky as things are swollen. So, if no problem around other dogs, then waiting til after her heat to spay is probably best. But if you have a male in the house......I would probably ask the vet what he thinks about spaying right now.
It is very difficult to keep them apart for that week of peak heat. I guess I had a full 2 weeks of misery trying to keep mine apart during her first heat. My male was very persistent and relentless. But it is crucial that she not be allowed to mate. |
