We microchip all of the puppies that we sell. The chip is implanted under the skin not in the flesh and therefore there is little reaction from the puppy to the injection as the pain is very minor. It would be like a mosquito biting your arm.
The needle does look huge but it is designed to make an opening large enough to allow the chip to be inserted and once the needle is withdrawn the skin closes back to normal. It is very rare to see any blood during the procedure.
We have been using microchips since they came out more than 20 years ago and never had a single issue with them. The new microchips use a 10 digit ISO numbering system where the older chips did not. A new scanner had to be purchased to read the new chips by the breeders and vets.
Breeders and vets in Canada cannot insert a microchip without a scanner present as the chip needs to be verified before implanting. Not certain about the USA but it's probably the same rule.
Our chips do not require an annual fee to maintain but the dog owner is responsible to advise the microchip company on a new address and other details such as a new telephone number.
