The good thing about a crate is you can move it from room to room with you, pick it up and put it next to you on the sofa, set it on the nightstand next to the bed, etc. It's really easy to poke your fingers in there too. We used lots and lots of bully sticks and Himalayan chews too, but most of the time she slept. It was hard to leave her in there, but I knew it was for her own good.

Rory is very, very active, but I know nothing compares to the energy of a puppy, especially Max! Max (and Cooper) is so lucky to have you! Just thought I'd mention the crate to see if maybe you wouldn't have to spend large amounts of time in the xpen yourself.
Max doesn't show any signs of pain. He never did, but I continue the medication. Did you ever find the reason for Rory's limping?

I have thought of the crate but haven't tried it. I really think that Max will just scream for hours. It's certainly an option though. The main issues are from 7-9am and then from about 5-8pm. Both of them will sleep most of the day if I don't entertain them or wake them up.

For some reason I assumed it would heal much faster, even with activity. I feel I've wasted 2 weeks not keeping him confined and he's showing very little signs of getting better. Starting yesterday we finally got very strict with his activity. I'd rather hear crying and screaming than see limping. I may have to try his crate later this evening. Or, like I said before, put Cooper in the ex pen. He'll just sit there for about 20 minutes and then fall asleep, while Max lays on the outside.
