I tend to agree that she will be fine, but as we plan on taking some all day hikes I want to be ready if she gets too tired to keep walking. She is a little on the small side at 3.8 lbs. and a 5-6 mile hike may a bit much since she isn't used to the mountain terrain.

I agree with you

It does not hurt you to be prepared. I also have a 3.8 lber that I carry when I feel she gets too tired. My 7 lber however, will walk forever!
If I'm in the city, I use my Kwigy Bo Alex, but if I was hiking, I would take my Outward Hound sling that people here have recommended.
