College educated (business degree) but it was the only job in my town I could find when I graduate. Now that I've move 1100 miles away from home to the big city of Austin, Texas I'm looking for a new job, preferably a salaried one in my field!

The shelves are empty That is because they've instituted a new inventory control system. It works well IF you fix the inventory numbers. BUT in order to save money Walmart has cut a lot of workers and now has department managers running 3 or 4 depts. With that many depts (and products!) and virtually no help they just can't get all the fixing and ordering done. I was lucky because I was the pharmacy manager so I only had one dept. However, I still had 50-100 products out of stock in my department (out of a few thousand items) because I couldn't get them in from the manufacturer

the selection of products is horrible- yep. They mainstreamed a lot of stuff trying to save money, but in the end its just driving the customer to shop at other places b/c they can't find what they need.

you NEED to know your prices again w/ 1 person running multiple departments its near impossible to keep everything priced. Just with my one department I would have trouble keeping labels up on everything... usually b/c people or kids will take them down.

the lines are long and their employees are either disgruntled or just don't care they have jobs! Its really hard for employees to give a darn when the store treats them like crap! there is a scheduling system in place now, and it schedules people by the amount of money made by that store the previous year on that day. The result is being short staffed most of the time. When you are doing multiple peoples jobs for practically minimum wage its hard to have a good attitude.

At my store I was running a department that makes 100,000 a WEEK (and that was just the OTC part, not the behind the counter pharmacy), pretty much by myself for $9/hr.

I earned 40 hrs of vacation my first year there, but because my job code in the computer said "part time" instead of "full time" even though my first year I worked full time every single week, I did not ANY of my vacation time I earned.

Also, the insurance they provide is crap. Most employees can't afford it. My fiancee and I only got the dental with was 12 each month, we were planning to use for the free cleanings once we got to Austin, but b/c our job codes dropped back down from full time to part time again we lost our dental insurance. So that was 100 from each of us down the drain. I could go on and on and on with ways that walmart treats their employees poorly. So its really hard to care to do a good job when you are treated like that. Though I still try to.

We do NOT shop at Walmart anymore. The only thing we'll buy there is on occasion when we are getting off work (we work from 10pm-7am) and don't feel like stopping any where else.

Luckily we have a H.E.B. a couple hundred yards from our apartment and we just walk there any time we need groceries. We'll occasionally go to Whole Foods for things like the dogs' food. Everything else we need (which usually isn't much) we try to buy second hand.
thank you for your response. its nice to hear from an actual employee. its quite sad how you get treated there and i can understand why some employees don't give a damn now. i would be the same way if that was the only job i could find in my town. i'm never going to a Walmart again.
