One thing our trainers told us is to make yourself the most interesting thing there. Use a high pitched tone, a squeaky toy or the like so that she thinks coming back and/or paying attention to you is fun.
As for the petsmart classes- I've had really good experiences with them. But like everything else, it depends on the individual trainer. I watched a couple of different classes until I found one I was comfortable with. Plus I took a weekday morning class because it was less crowded (both the class and the store).
