Some vets give meds because it has been shown to speed healing and it keeps them comfortable. Others don't because they think either not much pain is involved or it should be withheld b/c supposedly it makes them feel too good, so they need to feel the pain. Couldn't imagine going with the latter.
Neutering is a very short procedure. He should be just fine.
