When my older Yorkie has any kind of problems with his legs or feet, my first inclination is to allow him to rest, to prevent further injury: inspect the feet and pads with a flashlight and magnifier for foreign objects and cuts, and access any pain or swelling. If his pain does not stop after a while and some rest, I take him to the vet's. If the problem improves and continues to improve over the next day or two, then we wait. Anything that doesn't clear up completely by the 4th or 5 day gets seen by the vet.
