My older Yorkie I adopted at 5 Years old came to me doing that. I've heard of some people with older pups that do it. Maybe the mental state of the dog... I tried to get mine out of doing it, by very gently waking him at different times during the day... I was only able to minimize it, and it depends on how deep a sleep he is in when he's awakened. He's worse if you pull the blanket out from under him, slowly and gently. The movement really sets him off.
