With starting with a new puppy in our house, we started taking Winston outside every half an hour. I have heard that trying to ppee pad train and then convert to outside can be more difficult. After learning Winston's schedule, he goes out every hour and I know he will go #2 in the morning and in the afternoon. As soon as he starts sniffing around he goes outside or if he wakes up from a nap, after playing or after eating. So far we have been really successful and haven't had a handful of accidents. This morning he even told me he had to go out. After we have a successful trip outside, he is praised and given his favorite treat as a reward.
As for crate training, he has access to it all day with his toys and bed being in the crate. When food time comes, his bowl is placed in their as well. Since we got Winston he has slept in the crate at night. He doesn't like it and neither do I, but it is the safest place for him until we get a bigger bed. The first night he cried a lot, but after I fell asleep he stopped and ever since he cries a bit till he realized he isn't coming and then goes to bed. He also hasn't had any accidents at night or woken up to go outside in the middle of the night. So far, I must admit I have been very lucky with him!!
