Your doing it right, a firm NO! when she goes in the wrong place then put her straight on the pad, with lots of praise when she goes in the right place.
The potty signs change as they get older (well they did with my pup).
When I first brought Poppy home she would cry, sniff the floor and walk backwards when she wanted potty.. now she just sniffs the floor so you have to keep a close eye on her.
Also once she has the pads nailed start gradually moving them closer to the door if you want to eventually train her to go outside.
