I am so sorry for your loss. We had to put one of our dog's to sleep a couple of weeks ago. While it was so incredibly difficult (he was 17+ years and a larger, 60+ pound mutt), we adopted another dog the next weekend and it really helped us move forward.

Anyway, I know that silkies are generally larger, but I don't think there is any real way to tell. When I adopted Vinnie, he was a mere 7 pounds. He was really underweight though, and today he's about 14 pounds (sturdy, not overweight). I adopted him when he was about 2 and I don't think there was any real way to know how big he was going to be. One good thing to do would be to adopt an adult dog from a rescue. If the adult is full-grown, you'll know if he/she is going to be a larger dog. Plus, you'll help save a dog who needs a home!
