I have had a terrible problem with slugs this year and found a product that is safe for pets and wildlife and also can be used in vegetable gardens up to and including the day of harvest. It is called Slug Magic and is an iron phosphate. I still keep my dogs from going in amongst the plants where I've put this stuff, but it's nice to know it won't harm them if they should. Other names of iron phospate which are safe for pets are Escar-Go and Sluggo. Good luck! I use it for slugs, but it kills snails too.
