I read that shiney objects help repel hawks & they don't like bright colors. So I have placed shiney objects around the yard & bright colored windsocks too. We have hawks flying around at times.
One suggestion for shiney objects is to glue together old cds or software cds/dvds together shiney side out. Drill hole & connect disks with fishing line. Hang & let them flash in the wind. You can string together as many as you want. So far we haven't had any hawks coming down close to the house.
There probably isn't any one sure way of preventing them, but these were easy for me to do. So far successful.
