I don't agree with that. Yes there are tons of dogs in the pound, but what if you are looking for a particular mix? Like a Yorktese or a Yorkchon? I can guarantee that you wont find too many small dogs at a pound, rescue, or humane society. They are too cute and if someone plans to give a small mix liek a Yorktese or Yorkchon away, they put it in their newspaper rather than send it to the pound. They know that they can get money for the dog. Even if you did have a pound (which I don't have one around me) that has little dogs, they won't be just a Yorktese or a Yorkchon or a Yorkie-poo, etc. They will be tons of different breeds. If someone purposely breeds for a mix, they know what they are getting. They are getting a little piece of both breeds. I love mix dogs and purbreds, but I dont want 30 dogs running around my house because thats too many. I want to give all my dogs equal attention. So if I am interested in getting a Yorkie and a Maltese, why not get a Yorktese. Also, if you get a Yorktese from a breeder, you meet the parents and have an idea of their size, personality, etc. At a pound you don't.
One of the main reasons I will never rescue a dog from the pound is because I have had several bad experiences with pound dogs. One dog that I got from a pound/rescue had a mean streak in him. I loved him to death but he caused my 10 year old step brother to get stitches in his face! He also bit the entire family including me! I don't want to go through that again. I loved him so much and I didn't want to give him away! I just had to! So the next time I consider getting a dog that isn't purebred, it will be from a reputable breeder where I know what I'm getting! Whether the litter was an accident or on purpose. As long as the breeder's dogs and puppies are well taken care of and I can trust the breeder, I'll get one! I like mixed breeds, but I am too scared to get another pound dog!
