Many people have been successful with bell training using the specially made doggy doorbells, or simply hanging jingle bells or windchimes on the doorknob. There are a couple threads in this section about bells and training.
My oldest boy didn't start barking until he was 6 months old. Now he has developed quite a voice. He doesn't "talk" all day, but when he does, it is loud.
