Collars should really only be used for their tags. For a leash it's safer for them if you'll use a harness or a vest, puts the pressure from the leash around the middle instead of across their throat. I'd just put one on him and then leave it. Use treats and his favorite toys to encourage him to play and run around with the harness/vest on. If he's as food motivated as mine is, it won't take long at all for him to forget about what he's wearing. Plus the vests will give you a chance to play dress up
