I have done grooming myself on my dogs since they were babies because teh ONE TIME I brought them to a groomer, Daisy screamed when the idiot clipped her nails too short and they came out looking like ugly rats instead of pretty yorkies. I just don't trim their fur around their butt at all - if I trim them, it's overall trimming. I just lift their tails every night before bed and if there is a pancake stuck, I comb it out or wash if a wet one (sorry for the graphic details LOL).
