there is a city ordnance saying no structure(including fences, decks, home additions, garages and carports) can be installed/built within 10 feet of a neighbors property without there permission. because the addition would affect there ability to add on to there property and/or affect the view from one of there windows and doors. because this could affect the value of tehar home you need written permission from all neighbors who have property that touches your own.
It may seem stupid but it is actually to protect neighbors from property damages. like for instance when our house was built in the 30s they built the garage 3 feet into the neighbors property so from then until about 5 years ago his land was valued and taxed for three feet he did not have. it may not seem like much but over the years it dose add up, not to mention when he built his shed hey gave him trouble about putting it essentially in the middle of his yard, when it is only about 2 feet from our garage
