i can understand people not wanting their dogs up on the furniture but i don't see why you wouldn't want to cuddle with him on your lap when your boyfriend isn't there. don't you miss snuggling with him? I'd teach him that he's only allowed on the couch when you say its ok. Give him a nice comfy bed in the living room to be his place and make sure he has interactive toys to occupy himself with. a bored dog is a naughty dog.
