One of my step brothers had to let his black lab go because of his son being allergic. The dog and child would not stay away from each other, and it wasn't the dogs dander or hair the child was allergic to, it was the dogs saliva. They were heart broken they never saw it coming and my step brother had the dog very well trained. He had show dogs and bred labs before the kids came along. The dogs he kept were no longer living by the time his son was born. He decided to get another dog when his son was about 2 yrs old. But every time the child touched anything the dog had licked, drooled on ate or drank out of he had a reaction. If the dog licked him it was really bad!
