I was carrying a bag of treats in my hands to put away, and he starts jumping on his hind legs...and he'd balance there. So I'd say, "Up!" And he would do it, (not knowing thats the word for it), so I gave him a small treat. That's exactly how I taught "Kaji do you want up?"
He just started asking to be picked up and I just pared the words with it, for him it's a command in Spanish, it's much shorter. Eventually, I asked and he responded because he learned what the words meant. Just keep doing what you're doing and Mango will learn all kinds of things.
