It's probably unlikely that you'll be able to change his/her mind about getting a dog. Once people make up their minds about getting one, nothing will stop them.
I disagree with not going out with frinds to stay at home with dogs. I feel guilty when I do leave the pets behind, but I still have a life. I just make sure that I exercise the crap out of Rizzo then put him up for the night so I can go out clubbing or bar hopping. If I'm going to be gone too long then I leave them (cat and dog) with my landlord's family.
I know I'm lucky and not everyone has this kind of set up, but people don't have to give up their lives when they adopt a dog.
