I'm sorry you have such a difficult decision to deal with. I hope in the time you have you are able to come up with a plan that suits both you and Cody best.
On that note, I started out with Roxie being "temporary". Her previous owner (who is my future SIL) offered her to me when she suddenly had to move into an apartment building that did not allow pets. She said that once her and my brother were married and could get a house, they would take her back. I went along with it because I knew how upset SIL-to-be was about the whole thing. It didn't take her long (a few weeks) to see that Roxie was in good hands here with me, she loved us, and was happy here. Roxie is now MY dog, and SIL-to-be has no intentions of taking her back. She still gets to see her, but knows it would be bad for Roxie to take her back at this point. I have had Roxie for just over 8 months now, and I would be crushed if I had to give her back.
