I know you has time, I am giving you my opinion on the current plan. I do not think it is a good one. No, having him crate all day is not a good idea either.

Dogs do not long for things as we do- when Dani returns to bring him home he will be thrilled. I ask question. Do you have any evidence to back up these claims about dogs and emotions? Studies? Statistics? If not then I don't think you should encourage this plan when you don't know the consequences it could have on Cody.
Service dogs are trained then go to their forever home. It not same thing as switching dog from home to home like a wiffle ball.
