I got my 13yr old Sheltie for Christmas as a surprise from my husband. Actually I got a a package of puppy stuff - not even a picture - and was able to pick him up a few days after the holiday. The breeder said since it was just 2 adults we could have him a little earlier. Most people he would make wait until after the New Year for the same reasons Pat mentions.

I think it was better that way. First the anticipation was exciting, and I also had a chance to wrap my mind around the idea and shop for things I thought I would need.
