I was very adamant about the no-begging thing with Tatum. My grandpa used to watch my poodle, Dax, during the day while I was working (we lived next door to him) and he would feed Dax and his poodle straight from the table on his lap. Very frustrating habit to break after that.
With Tatum though she doesn't actually beg for food but when we are finished eating and still just sitting at the table talking or something, she'll sit by my chair and do her little low growl/rumble because she wants on my lap. I'll let her sit on my lap but she totally ignores my plate right in front of her.
The best thing is to crate them while you're eating or totally ignore the begging behavior. Just giving in even once will set you back to square one.
