Thank you for this suggestion -- it worked beautifully.
I put Teddy on the couch and told him to sit, then I moved the reward downward when I gave the "down" command. He did it on the first try! I did it once more on the couch and then moved him to the floor. He went down both times.
I'm looking forward to dinner time and working on this some more.
