yeah hge dogs act really sick because what happens is the red blood cells rapidly increase and the dog is very sick and they can die from this as the blood cells multiply so quickly and can shut down organs so dog needs to be on heavy fluid therapy and antibiotics for this - it can be caused by salmonella, ecoli from bad food or a dead animal out in the yard, etc and once they get it then it is very easy for them to get this again - this is why I always take mine in immediately with any bloody poop as it may be colitis but always best to check out if blood in stool.
