I think everyone gave you good advise on making the two of you more comfortable with each other but I am a little (very little) concerned about you constantly wiping her tears because they smell. What do you mean constantly? How much tearing is she having? Are you sure the smell comes from her tears? Could the smell be coming from her mouth?
