Personally, I welcomed any gesture when dealing with the loss of my pets.
Too many people dont understand, they say its "just a dog"... so when someone even sends a nice sympathy card it is so wonderful and really touching. I am sure any of the things you mentioned, flowers or a casserole would be very warmly received.
