A good breeder learns tricks of the trade through their mentor. From what I've read, and Joey's breeder told me, it should be in proportion to their body, and not some set length. Breeders who always dock at 2 inches are going to get a much different look on a 7-pound dog than a 3-pound dog. I've read that some breeders pull the tail in a downward position, and where it meets a certain point of the body is where they dock. I can't remember what that point is though, but it would be different on different dogs.
