We crate all of our dogs if we are going to be gone more than a few minutes. They don't mind it at all. This can sometimes be several hours and they have no ill effects. We leave the doors to the crates open when we are home and many times they go in and sleep on their own.
You can also buy a very large crate that would fit a great dane and put a potty pad on one side and her bed on the other. That way she can potty while you are gone but still safe and sound and so is your carpet!
