We also close ours when we are gone and at night time when we go to bed and then I put a potty pad down at the door. We have outside lights so I can watch them for their last 'potty' and then the door gets locked until morning. Our yard is fenced and we have a concrete patio area in part of it...I keep their playpen out there so I can pull it accross the end of the patio and block off the grass when it rains or when it gets dark out. I do love the doggie door and it does make life easier and accidents less but you still have to watch them whe they go out. I have never had anything come through ours that didn't belong but I did worry about raccoons when we lived on the lake.
