They have scent glands on the pads of the feet, and this little kick helps spread their scent, which for some Yorkies is very Frito-chip like! I love it when Joey does this, he reminds me of a little bull. For this type of barking some experts suggest that you should thank the dog, and say something like, "It's ok." This type of warning/barking is part of their job, and eventually they will get use to normal neighborhood sounds, and only bark if it really is a new type of sound. While a Yorkie may not be able to protect you, they definitely can warn you.
