I've read so many times that the dewclaws have grown back, so I know the procedure isn't foolproof. Also, if they have to have the dewclaws removed as an adult it's much more serious. There have also been numerous threads of dogs ripping off dewclaws after they got snagged on something, again, this could be dangerous, and very painful. So, unless a person does it right, the dewclaw has a very good chance of causing later problems, although I'm not sure some breeders care about this. |
I have a Yorkie whose dew claws were never removed and he broke them getting it hooked on his bed. Now they just hang there. I have to get it lasered off. It is sad but must be done.
All this could have been avoided if they were removed when he was a puppy. for some reason the breeder left the back dew claws and only did the front claws.
