When Jezebel got spayed a couple of weeks ago, I bought a package of onesies at Walmart. They carry the Gerber brand in a 5-pack for about $9. I cut out more than a hole for the tail ... I trimmed along the lower edge, leaving the trim with the snaps, and up to and over her tail (as you can see in the pic below). I picked a size that was loose so that it wouldn't rub against the incision.

I liked that it protected the incision and kept it clean, as well as preventing her from licking or getting to the sutures. I also liked that the onesie didn't prevent her from doing anything normal, such as eating, drinking, peeing, or pooping. The hole was large enough that she was able to potty without unsnapping or getting anything on the onesie.
