mine's been pierced for 10 years now. It took well over a year for it to heal and they get infected very easily. I do know they have a lot better info these days on how to care for them so that this doesn't happen. I'm a poor healer when it comes to piercings, so I wouldn't do it again if mine closed. And really other than showing it off at the beach, it doesn't do much. I'm just too stubborn to take mine out
