Well, at least some of their actions are being compiled here. If anyone wants to dispute something, I'd like to see it. I'm one of those that thought of AKC as the premier registry but my rose colored glasses have been snatched off.

I've been doing a little looking at UKC. The one drawback to them is they offer no limited reg. as AKC does but we all know you can do an end-around with that. I did find that they have a policy on puppy mills and seem to enforce it. I also couldn't find any major complaints about them so far.

Here's their policy statement on puppy mills. I had to copy it from a talk forum so can't verify it. There is a link but it wouldn't work for me but feel free to try it.

The UKC puppy mill policy, from their website.

Quote:
United Kennel Club was the first dog registry to publish a Puppy Mill policy. During its first eight decades, UKC registered few breeds that were sold through pet shops so puppy mills rarely used the registry. As more breeds were added, the Registration Department was alarmed to discover a few breeders registering large numbers of litters and breeding females at every heat. These practices prompted the formulation in 1990 of the UKC Puppy Mill Policy.

UKC defined a puppy mill as a kennel operation that mass produces puppies for profit only. Numbers alone do not make a puppy mill, since many breeders who register above-average numbers of litters per year have clean facilities and well-cared-for dogs. As a starting point, however, UKC looked at breeders who produced a high number of litters annually and those about whom we received an inordinate number of complaints.

Every breeder who registered ten or more litters per year and every breeder whose practices had been questioned received a visit from a UKC Field Representative. Happily, only a small number of breeders were determined to be operating as puppy mills. Their registration privileges were revoked.

Although the Registration Department continually monitors this problem, UKC's prompt action limited the infiltration of puppy mill breeders into the registry. If you suspect a puppy mill is using the UKC registry, please notify your local animal control authorities as well as the UKC Registration Department. Remember that UKC has no authority to take any action against puppy mills other than revoking their privilege to register dogs with us. The only effective way to shut them down is to work with your local animal control authorities.
