I do prefer stainless steel over plastic but it is dishwasher safe so you can sanitize it pretty well. Just make sure you take it apart and clean it well and replace the filters when necessary.

They do have one that has stainless steel....

The SS on this model is just to make it look pretty: it does not protect your dog from chemicals leaching into the water from the plastic.
