I'm not sure about lines, but definately lack of sunshine is a contributing factor.
One of the best Maltese breeders, no longer breeds, but is a judge.....still makes sure that her Maltese receive plenty of sunshine. Even in the coldest weather, if the sun is shining, outside they go on the deck.
