We kept Bailey in a 4x4 expen while potty training. It is important to keep the area small until they learn bladder control. At 8 mos - she was holding it all day so I doubled her expen to 8x8. At one year, she had run of the house.
We kept her expen in the basement because the basement has full length windows (so she could watch outside). We didn't have the poop problem in the pen- tho. Bailey has always pooped outside. She's a once a day pooper - so we don't bring her in until she poops.
