| Yeah, Teresa, that's almost always what I do. Especially if it is just a passing situation. I just nod, smile and say thanks. My mom babysits two little four year old girls and from the time they were born, they were around my little poodle, Zach (a male). So they have a very hard time not calling Chloe a "he" just because they are associating her with the previous dog they knew. I never correct them either. 
I have to admit though, I'm bad about mixing gender sometimes too. There's a Westie in the duplex behind ours and I know it is a she but I continue to refer to it as a he. Partially this is because the dog is old and very scruffy/manly looking. It's also because I tend to say things like "She (Chloe) didn't bark at him (Westie) today." Or something similar. If I say "She didn't bark at her" it sounds confusing!
