I'm not sure where you were raised, but being bred, born and raised in the south by southerners youngsters were taught to respect their elders - no exceptions.
I honestly believe that the "Steel" in Steel Magnolia referred to the color of their hair - Steel Blue - earned with age. Funny thing isn't Steel Blue what we would expect to see in a properly coated Yorkie. Anyway, those Steel Magnolias had grown up, had been taught to respect their elders, and as they aged they had "earned" the respect of the youngsters.
And yes, those Steel Magnolias has earned the right to speak their mind and get their point across, tell you where to go and how to get there, smiling all the while and having you turn thank them for the sage advice.
